7 Day Italy Itinerary: Rome, Florence & Venice (Affordable + Stress-Free Guide)
We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.

If you’ve been dreaming about Italy but feel overwhelmed trying to plan it all, this is exactly the kind of trip you need.
This 7 day Italy itinerary (Rome, Florence, Venice) is perfect for first-time travelers, families, or honestly anyone who wants to experience Italy without overspending or stressing over every detail. We planned this trip to be affordable, easy, and flexible, and it ended up being one, if not thee, favorite trip ever. (7 days in Italy with 2 days of travel, totally 9 full days).
We booked our ENTIRE TRIP, including flights and hotels through this deal 👉 BEST Deal Ever with TravelZoo’s Top 20 and I would do it again in a heartbeat and recommend it to everyone who asks. The hotels included complimentary breakfast every morning, which saved us both time and money (and they were actually GOOD — fresh pastries, espresso, meats, cheeses… not your typical hotel breakfast). These breakfasts ended up being a highlight we looked forward to each morning.
For tours and activities, we used 👉 Viator for almost everything. Once we found something reliable, we stuck with it the entire trip. When you’re traveling internationally, the last thing you want is to deal with scams or sketchy bookings — this made everything smooth and stress-free.
How We Planned an Affordable Italy Trip (Without the Stress)
If you’re trying to plan an affordable Italy itinerary, here’s what worked for us:
- Book hotels with breakfast included 👉 TravelZoo Deal (check because they have other amazing deals as well- besides just Italy). Hotels, dining, flights, or full experiences.
- Pre-book major tours so you’re not wasting time in lines 👉 Viator (again just input where you are headed and they have a TON of options).
- Use public transportation instead of taxis- buy multiple day passes to save money and be sure to validate (speaking from experience, because you will get fined).
- Keep your itinerary simple (3 cities in 7 days is perfect).
This approach made our Italy itinerary to Rome Florence Venice feel easy instead of overwhelming.
Rome Itinerary: Days 1–3 🇮🇹
Day 1: Vatican City, Historic Rome & Trevi Fountain at Sunset

We started our Rome itinerary with a Vatican tour booked here 👉 Vatican Tour — highly recommend doing this first.
If you want to level it up, add the climb to the top of St. Peter’s Basilica dome. It’s a workout, but the views are unreal.
This tour includes:
- St. Peter’s Basilica
- St. Peter’s Square
- Sistine Chapel
- Vatican Museums
Afterward, grab lunch near the Vatican (look for smaller local spots — always better).
Then walk:
- Ponte Sant’Angelo
- Castel Sant’Angelo (optional tour)
- Piazza Navona
- Piazza della Rotonda
- Pantheon
End your night at the Trevi Fountain at sunset — yes it’s crowded, but it’s worth it.

Getting Around Rome (Important Tip 🚨)
We bought a 3-day bus pass, which was way cheaper than taxis.
⚠️ You MUST validate your ticket when boarding — even if you already bought it. We learned this the hard way 😅
We also used city bikes and scooters, especially when we were tired.
Food & Hidden Gems
- Best area: Trastevere (authentic, less touristy)!!! Highly recommended!!!
- Must-try: carbonara, cacio e pepe, tiramisu
- Restaurant recs: Angelo’s, Tonnarello San Pietro, TheGusto Cucina con Enoteca
- Quick Bites Recs: Scialla The Original Street Food, Caffè Delle Commari, Rione XIV Bistrot
- *Honestly I don’t think you can get food wrong
- Hidden gem: side streets near Piazza Navona
👉 Wear comfortable walking shoes — this is not optional.

Day 2: Colosseum & Roman Forum Guide

We booked an audio tour here 👉 Colosseum Tour, which gave us flexibility and still tons of history.
Plan:
- Start early
- Plan to spend about 3–4 hours exploring
Nearby Food & Extras
- Eat in Monti (super cute neighborhood)
- Grab gelato after (always)
Optional adds (recommended):
- Palatine Hill
- Capitoline Hill views
- Underground Colosseum tour
Other fun Things to do in this area if you still have time in your day:
- Go Underground at Basilica di San Clemente
- Wander the Monti Neighborhood
- Visit the Baths of Caracalla
- Walk Through Circus Maximus (Quick + Free)
- Secret Garden Stop (If You Want Something Peaceful)
Day 3: Hidden Gems + Travel to Florence

Start early at the Knights of Malta Keyhole (avoid evening crowds).
Then:
- Bocca della Verità (Mouth of Truth) — live your Roman Holiday moment and channel your inner Audrey Hepburn.
- Spanish Steps (don’t sit — you’ll get fined!)
This area is perfect for:
- Shopping
- Gelato
- Wandering

We rented city bikes through a nearby park, which was such a fun, relaxed way to explore. Sometimes not having a full itinerary and just exploring where you are is the best way to find the hidden gems.
Next up: head to the train → Florence 🚆
Florence Itinerary: Days 3–5 🇮🇹

Day 3: Arrival + Best Florentine Steak
First stop in Florence?
Florentine steak. You have to.
Recommendations:
- Trattoria dall’Oste
- La Giostra
We checked into our hotel booked here 👉 TravelZoo and relaxed after travel. I loved that each hotel was booked and ready for us, without us having to do ANY work!
Day 4: Best Things to Do in Florence- day of exploring the whole city

Florence is one of the easiest cities to explore on foot.
Must-do:
- Visit the Duomo (book here 👉 florence duomo)
- Climb to the top — worth every step
This is one of the best stops in any Rome Florence Venice itinerary.
Sunset You’ll Never Forget
We biked up to Piazzale Michelangelo for sunset — incredible views.
OR go a little farther to San Miniato al Monte (hidden gem energy) and:
- Watch the sunset
- Listen to monks chanting
- Less crowds, more peaceful, different vibe
If you want people, music, and a high energy vibe I recommend Piazzale Michelangelo, for a quiet, more intimate experience head to San Miniato al Monte.

Food Experiences
- Try a cheese wheel pasta restaurant: Osteria Pastella, La Buchetta,
- Or book a cooking class 👉 Best cooking class in Florence
Day 5: See David + Travel to Venice

This last day we only had a couple hours before we needed to be on a train to Venice. So we opted for the first first time slot to see Michelangelo’s David(which was something I have always wanted to see, and was even more beautiful and inspiring than I imagined it would be)- we were able to see most of the museum in about an hour. (We couldn’t do any museums the day before because they were all closed on Mondays- something to consider when making reservations).
If you have more time, these museums are definitely worth considering adding to your itinerary:
Fun Museums in Florence (That Are Actually Worth It)
Classic Must-Do (But Still Worth It)
Uffizi Gallery
- One of the most famous museums in the world
- Packed with Renaissance art (think Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci)
- Huge collection — you won’t see it all in one visit
Tip: Book ahead or go early to avoid crowds
Galleria dell’Accademia
- Home to Michelangelo’s David (must-see)
- Smaller and easier to get through than Uffizi
- Also has cool unfinished sculptures (“Prisoners”)
Perfect for a short stop
Interactive & Unique (More Fun, Less “Museum Fatigue”)
Leonardo da Vinci Interactive Museum
- Hands-on exhibits based on Da Vinci’s inventions
- You can actually touch and try things
- Great for kids AND adults
One of the most fun, low-pressure museums
Museo Galileo
- Telescopes, globes, and real scientific instruments
- Focus on Galileo and space/science history
- A nice break from art museums
Cool + Different Vibes
Gucci Garden Museum
- Fashion + art + history combined
- Rotating exhibits and really aesthetic spaces
- Feels more like an experience than a museum
History That Feels Different
Museo dell’Opera del Duomo
- Houses original sculptures from the Duomo
- Way less crowded than climbing the cathedral
- Lets you see details up close
Great add-on to your Duomo day or if you are physically unable to climb the stairs

Palazzo Pitti
- Massive palace with multiple museums inside
- Art, fashion, royal rooms, gardens
- You could spend HOURS here
Next stop train → Venice
Venice Itinerary: Days 5–7 🇮🇹

Day 5: St. Mark’s Square & First Night in Venice
Venice feels completely different — in the best way.
We explored:
- St. Mark’s Square
- Doge’s Palace (book ahead 👉 Doge’s Palace Tour)
- Bridge of Sighs
Then grabbed dinner nearby (so many good hidden spots).
Getting Around Venice
Get a multi-day Vaporetto pass:

- Let’s you see the whole city from the canals
Day 6: Rialto Bridge, Gondola Ride & Food Guide

Start your day at:
- Rialto Fish Market
- Rialto Bridge
Then head to:
- Libreria Acqua Alta (books in bathtubs + cats 🐱)
Gondola Ride Tip
- Go near St. Mark’s Square
- It’s more affordable
- Negotiate the price!

Must-Try Food
- Cicchetti (Venice street food)
👉 Book a food tour 👉 Cicchetti Food and Wine Tour Venice
Best Dinner of the Trip
Ai Barbacani — canal window seating = unreal. This is easily the most romantic dinner I’ve ever experienced.
✨ Book early!
Also: leave time to just wander. That’s the magic of Venice. There are sooooo many good food options, that again, any of them are good options.
Day 7: Burano & Murano Day Trip

Take the Vaporetto to:
- Burano (colorful houses)
- Murano (glass blowing)
While you can book a tour- after reading a lot about it and hearing others experiences, I don’t think an actual tour is needed — explore on your own.
What to Do
- Watch glass being made (often free!)
- Buy authentic souvenirs
- Walk, eat, explore
- See the colorful, picturesque islands- worth the half day trip, no questions asked!!!
Perfect end to your Italy on a budget itinerary.
