Best Hikes Under a Mile in Joshua Tree National Park

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.

With Joshua Tree just about 2 hours away our family loves to get out and explore. However, with young kids in tow we have to be aware of our limits; so, we are constantly looking for the best hikes around a mile that our entire family can easily do. Joshua Tree National Park is full of amazing hikes that are perfect for all ages and abilities. These hikes highlight the best of the park and give glimpses into the beauty of it all with ample opportunities to scramble over boulders, take in the amazing landscape, see incredible rock formations and so much more.

As a family we love to get out and explore our National Parks. *Even more excited for next year when we can utilize the FREE 4th grade National Parks Pass for families. To get your own 4th grade pass and read about the “Every Kid Outdoors program” go here.

When visiting Joshua Tree National Park check out these easy hikes for kids.

Skull Rock

Skull rock is unique because it is literally seen from the main highway. No hiking necessary. Because of that it also gets crowded. Get there early in the morning or closer to sunset to avoid major crowds. The benefit to this landmark (besides how totally awesome it looks) is that it is surrounded by huge boulders. Perfect to climb on and explore around. We spent a good hour (maybe more) hiking around and just enjoying the area after grabbing a picture at the famous cranial rock. So whether or not you are a hiker or someone simply looking to drive thru and enjoy the majestic desert, this is a great pitstop.

Arch Rock/Heart Rock

This two for one quickly became a favorite of ours at our last outing to JTNP. You can find Arch Rock on any map and it is a pretty well laid out hike. However, a small 5 min detour off the main trail takes you to heart rock; a hidden Joshua Tree gem and one we simply loved. (See how I did that- “loved”, “heart” rock?!) The full hike at 1.2 miles with a .5 mile detour to the heart, is flat and easy. However, the end destination is one you will regret not seeing.

For details on finding the heart- head here.

Hidden Valley Nature Trail

If you only do one hike in the area, this should be it. This one mile loop trail takes you through it all. Easy for all skill levels the Hidden Valley Trail in Joshua Tree is relatively flat, has wild flowers, boulders, rock climbers, and of course, large Joshua Trees. This short and sweet hike gives you a glimpse of it all. It highlights what Joshua Tree is best known for- wild, desert beauty.

Joshua Tree Visitor Center

As you may have gathered simply from the name, this one is not a hike. But, I would highly recommend stopping in on your way into the park (it’s also a great place to get your entrance pass). This is the place to grab maps and info, souvenirs, food and drinks, and learn about the park. If you’re like us, it is also where kids can get the tools to become National Park Jr. Rangers. We do it at all the National Parks and it is a favorite activity of ours.
