The Best Creative Halloween Costumes for Kids
We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.
I don’t know about yours, but my kids change their minds about what they want to be for Halloween at least a gagillion times. And since we typically make our costumes, once it’s done, there’s no going back. And because of that, we have great, fast, easy to make costumes that are both creative and fun.
Take a look at these unique costumes that are sure to wow! on Halloween night.
Robot: This one was amazing in person. I feel like pictures just don’t do it justice. But, it’s made with a cardboard box for the body and head. Silver spray paint and then you get to be creative with the rest. We just happened to have an old laptop in our closet that we took apart and used for the front. Then we went to Walmart and bought push lights and battery powered Christmas lights in white. Dryer vent hoses for the arms and spray painted gloves finished off this look.
Cotton Candy: This costume couldn’t have been more perfect for my junk food junkie daughter. When we saw this idea I knew it was perfect for her. And it was literally so easy to make. We bought an adult shirt that would cover the majority of her body. Then we got pillow fluff from the craft store and adhered that with adhesive spray. Once it was all attached we spray painted the entire thing pink. We did the same thing to a shower cap and used a poster board for the “cone” hat. This costume made people laugh the entire night. But it was hilariously adorable.
Unicorn: Yes, I know this isn’t that unique. But, it’s different from the others you see as it is all made at home and was so easy and sweet. The horn is a Styrofoam cone and the rest is made from felt and glitter. I made the tutu from tulle, and added a battery pack of Christmas lights to this as well; which I recommend because kids glowing at night makes them much easier to see in the dark.
Hot Air Balloon: My favorite costume. Made with a basket from the craft store, a Styrofoam wreath (you guessed it, spray painted gold, which we did for a lot of this costume), and a large balloon from Amazon. You can find large balloon nets from the party store too. The little details were borrowed and found here. But, this one was so cool and you never see anyone else wearing anything like it.
Classic Ghost: Yes again, doesn’t sound unique, but think how many ghosts do you actually see anymore. This is a fun, classic costume that is easy and fast to make and really exemplifies Halloween.
Witch: Again, we took the stereotypical idea and even a store bought costume added a green face and this was about as cute and classic Halloween as it gets.
Pumpkins: This was a year I let my kids chose whatever they wanted to be at the store because of time. What did they choose? A dog costume. No, not a costume that makes them look like a dog. But, a costume made for a dog. It was the easiest costume in the world. You just strap it on and you’re ready. I just thought it was hilarious and shows you can be super creative with different options.
Astronaut: Again, we took a store bought costume we already had on hand and with a couple of 2 liters, some tape and construction paper added a bit of unique flare to it. Instead of a common astronaut, we made a rocket man.
Butterfly: With some wings and all black clothing we already owned we added some make-up to create a beautiful butterfly. Easy and made a little 5 year old girl VERY happy. Make-up does wonders to changing the look of something common.
Vampire: I have one kid who loves the vintage Halloween looks. Last minute she decided she wanted to be a Vampire-bat. I think all families should have Halloween staples so getting a vampire black cape that can be used for a lot of different costumes is a smart investment. Using that and a man’s shirt we found for cheap we were able to tatter that and some old leggings we had lying around to create a vampire/bat look. Using make-up finished off the outfit perfectly.
We are still up for ideas this year, but hoping to find something fun the kids can all do together. What are your kids going to be for Halloween?
