Yo ho, yo ho a vampirates life for me! Looking for a swashbuckling fun evening for the whole family? The Pirate Dinner Adventure in Buena Park, CA transforms itself during the month of October into a Halloween “spooktacular” vampire meets pirate adventure.

The spooky evening pits good against evil, sweet vs savory, and fun vs fear. We were thrilled by the high flying acrobatics, aerial artistry, swordplay, and stunts as the vampirates tried to overcome the “Vampire Hunter,” in this seasonal fun dinner adventure.

Pre-Show

The night starts with appetizers and drinks in the lobby where you can pick up your souvenirs, take photos, and meet your crew. As you enter you are given a color coded bandanna so you can gear up with the right accessories to cheer on your assigned vampirate. The pirates crash the stage then proceed to take their assigned crew to their stations. We learned we were part of the PURPLE CREW!!!! Perhaps not the smartest or strongest of all the pirates, but dang it all if he didn’t have the best dance moves!

The theater itself brings the idea of a pirate adventure to life and reality. The ship of the Evil Captain Sebastian the Black sits in the center of the stage, with a moat, and crow’s nest for each vampire/color surrounding it. Regardless of where you sit, you are ensured a great view of the entire show.

The food!

We were pleasantly surprised by the quality (and quantity) of the meal prepared for us. The adult menu: soup or salad with dressing. Roasted chicken, mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables and unlimited soft drinks. Dessert was a chocolate brownie with a raspberry and chocolate sauce. The kids menu: also soup or salad, a drink, a mini slider, mac n’ cheese, mashed potatoes and fruit. Same dessert. There was something to make even a picky eater happy. //Vegetarian and vegan option are available at checkout//

We couldn’t wait to sink our teeth into all that good food!

The Show!

Literally starts with vampires swinging into the scene right above us, and from there the fun and action don’t stop. There was singing, sword fighting, dancing, trampolines, competition and even audience participation. My kids were chosen to go on board with the vampire-pirates and it was the highlight of the night. My son was sad because he thought the girls were going to go fight the pirates and he was ready to be part of that action; but let’s be honest, he probably would’ve just fallen in the water. Those chosen to participate before the show started were called up and were sworn in as honorary “vampirates”. It was such a funny moment of the show and special moments for them. The cast are careful to play down the creepy factor at this part and play up humor and comedy. Expect some booty shaking, dancing, and hilarity from not only the actors but your loved ones as well.

I’ll say this… the ending was shocking! Even a couple of weeks later my kids still quote it and talk about it constantly. “Freddddddy……” I don’t want to ruin it for you, but it was quite unexpected.

Two recommendations: There is only one bathroom with a couple of stalls and at the end of the show the line was loooong. Go before the show and don’t wait to go at the end if it’s an emergency. My second suggestion: Show younger kids pictures of the vampirates before you go. They are a little creepy… I mean they are vampire-pirates. And their make-up, while not gory, is intense. I prepared my kids beforehand and was glad I did because it still took a moment for them to warm up to the actors interacting with them.

This is such a fun show that brings the Halloween spirit to life. And because it only runs for a limited time, don’t miss out on your chance to make this a Halloween treat for your kids.

The only problem? My kids are already begging to go back and say they just can’t wait another year to see it.
