Madera County in the Fall is absolutely amazing. Of course you have Yosemite National Park, which in and of itself is worth visiting. But with an incredibly diverse landscape ranging from the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the rich fertile farmlands of the valley, full of pistachio’s, almonds and pomegranates; there are no shortage of places to visit, activities to do and fun to be had.

As you plan your fall vacation to Madera County you will want to take advantage of all that the area has to offer.

Take a ride on the historic Yosemite Sugar Pine Railroad, hike along Bass Lake and enjoy a magnificent meal overlooking the water. Head into Yosemite where you will find yourself in awe over the majestic monoliths and waterfalls all while being surrounded by an array of vibrant fall colors.

With a wide variety of activities to choose from and places to stay, you are sure to be blown away with the beauty and adventure found in Madera County.

Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad

Location: 56001 California 41 Fish Camp, Ca 93623

This scenic train gives you a glimpse into a different time of the Sierra National Forest. Located just 10 minutes from the southern entrance of Yosemite National Park off Hwy 41 this is fun for the whole family. There are different options available including a 1-hr historical ride, a 3-hour dinner, train ride and live music option. Or even a jazz train. All fun. All worth doing! Plus you can add panning for gold, a picnic, shopping and more to your day! Open April-November

Bass Lake

You might not think of going to a lake in the Sierras as a great fall activity. However, the weather during the Fall in Bass Lake is absolutely perfect. Plus, the water is warm enough in September and early October to actually enjoy. Fall is also the perfect time to take a hike around the lake, bike, go fishing, or just relax and take in the scenic views and beautiful colors. And after labor day you can find amazing deals staying at The Pines Resort… which is also where we had an amazing dinner with a gorgeous view at Ducey’s on the Lake. I highly recommend it!

Yosemite National Park

Planning a summer visit to Yosemite Valley is completely different than a fall trip to the park. Both fantastic. Both very unique. Fall means less playing in the water, less crowds, and more magnificent colors. I definitely recommend visiting the Ahwahnee Hotel, now called the Majestic Yosemite Hotel, to get the best fall foliage in one area. Fall is also a great time to hike and enjoy the scenery. And I always recommend a hike to lower Yosemite Falls. Easy but stunning. If you are driving through I recommend Glacier Point and the Tunnel View for a quick step out and great photo opp. And Mariposa Grove, one of the very first National Parks, is an impressive example of what those trees are after hundreds of years. The truth is, the entire place is simply magic… only added to by the fall colors all around. You can’t go wrong wherever you choose to adventure.

Oakhurst and Surrounding Area

For more fun activities in the area:

Yosemite Axe Throwing

Fossil Discovery Center of Madera County– If you are coming through Fresno this is a fun pit-stop; especially if you have a dino lover in your group.

Hikes:

Lewis Creek Trail to Corlieu Falls-honestly this trail is not well marked (especially doing this in the rain), but we found it and the falls are extraordinary.

Way of the Mono Trail– Overlooks Bass Lake. Super easy for the kids. Great views. Lots of interesting historical facts to stop and read about. Great short hike.

Other hikes in Yosemite Valley– Mirror Lake, check out this post for more things to do in the Valley

Food:

South Gate Brewing Company– quite honestly one of the best cheesesteaks we’ve ever had! And my husband lived in Philly. I dream about this sandwich. They also had an amazing homemade root beer and honestly everything we had there was delicious.

Deli Delicious– We had sandwiches made here before heading into the valley. And they tasted delicious and fresh when we picnicked under half dome. It was a smart move since food in the valley is a lot more expensive and we had a lot more options at the deli.

Lodging:

Bass Lake The Pines is beautiful and would be my choice.

In Yosemite The Ahwahnee is the nicest hotel, but the lodge is also a great option.

Outside the parks (and where we stayed) is The Best Western in Oakhurst. Super nice, affordable and great for a central location! Plus they have an on-site restaurant that comes with a complimentary at breakfast which was phenomenal. So much so, we went back for dinner and the food was better than we even expected. I would definitely go back and I would definitely recommend!

Don’t miss your opportunity to see the amazing Yosemite Valley and Madera County during the Fall.
