Enjoy the wonderful world of Oz at the San Diego County Fair

The 2019 San Diego County Fair is absolutely “Oz-some!” The theme this year of the fair is based off of L. Frank Baum’s ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” and it is absolutely adorable in every way! And, can you see what I did up there with “Oz-some?” As we meandered through the fair, we thoroughly enjoyed the themed characters we ran into, the classic decorations and movie posters, as well as the activities available at certain times; bummed we missed a few too. The fair is the perfect place to spend a summer night with the whole family!

The fair is full of fun themed areas
Meet some of the characters inside the interactive exhibits

What to do at the fair?

Watch the pig races, see dogs competitively dive, check out the theme exhibits (I loved them all), learn about California’s Living History, walk around the photography and other exhibits, or, take a look at the farm exhibit, animals and attractions. And, if you plan ahead you can watch one of your favorites in concert; they have so many incredible performers.

We enjoyed watching the dog jumping competition
And the baby could NOT get enough of the corn pit. We took her out kicking and screaming for more.
Or get up close and personal in the livestock area

And what’s a fair if you don’t try the food? Go classic with a corn dog, cotton candy, or lemonade. Or try something all new like a multi-patty burger between two donuts, or a buffalo chimichanga covered in flaming hot Cheetos dust. The fair always comes through with their fried delicacies like deep fried Oreos, or deep fried creme brulee. There is always the chance to try something new; like ice cream covered in Fruity Pebbles wrapped in Cotton Candy. Hey, I never said it was healthy, only fun and delicious.

We used a coupon book which helped us save some money on delicious food items. Who doesn’t need a giant pile of fries???

And, let’s talk rides. There are so many incredible, thrilling, exhilarating rides! The Ferris Wheel overlooking the water is a great choice. And when I think fair, the big slide comes to mind instantly! I have to admit that one is definitely my favorite. And, if you have the stomach for it, I saw a lot of rides that will make your heart pump and stomach flop. I’m a wuss anymore so I can’t do those, but my daughter and husband are huge fans. I get nauseous watching. I’ll stick to the slide, thank you very much. Or try your luck at winning one of those huge animals that is bigger than a small car. I don’t know where people put them, but they sure look fun as you walk around the fair with them. My kids were envious of every person holding one.

Midway Games.
And rides.

However, I’ll add this little tidbit. I honestly don’t think you need to spend a single dime to have fun at the fair once you are inside. There are countless ways to occupy your day and night that don’t cost a thing. The very atmosphere of the fair is enough to leave a person satisfied. There is music, lights, free exhibits, decorations, shows; the fun just keeps coming. And there truly is something for everyone. The thrill seekers, the intellectuals, the animal lovers, the musicians, the gardeners. You name it and you can find something to suit them.

Fair admission is $20 for adults ages 13-61. $14 for seniors ages 62+, as well as kids 6-12 years old. And children 5 and under are free.

There are SO many ways to save on parking, admission, food, and rides. Make sure to plan your day accordingly. Check out all the different ways you can save here. There are places to buy tickets at a discount beforehand, kids are free on certain days, military discounts, and there are certain days and times when food is discounted so you can try smaller portions of more things. Seriously, be smart before you go and you can save enough money to play more once inside.

You still have 9 days left to enjoy the fair. If you plan on going more than once consider investing in a season pass. The fair will close with a “Wicked” 4th of July spectacular firework show! Maybe if you tap your heels together and say “There’s no place like the fair” you’ll wake up here. Hey, it’s worth a try.
